The Ministry of Science and Technology  was established in 1982, following the recommendations of the government appointed Iftah Committee. The committee defined the responsibilities of the Ministry:

Forming a national policy oriented towards science and Technology, technological analysis and organization, and coordination of research areas. The committee also recommended to establish a foundation for basic and infrastructure research.
