The Music Department deals with all the subjects related to the professional music in Israel, according to the Music Section's and its committees' recommendations, and according to the considerations defined by the Culture Administration.
The department deals with implementing the policy defined in the section and the administration, while also defining the criteria and method of support for the executive bodies, for the creators, and organizations in various levels, including both major institutes (such as the philharmonic orchestra, the opera) and new projects in their early stages.
The general aim is to assist, to promote and encourage the performance of high level artistic music, emphasizing the Israeli creator and performer, while exercising constant concern for the well being of the music life in Israel.
The department deals with various types of music: artistic music sometimes referred to as "Classic Music" (mainly), jazz, ethnic music, oriental music and light music (minor). At this stage, there is no actual work being done in regards to hard rock or pop, assuming that these are perceived more as form of entertainment or as commercialized products.
The department regularly deals with 100 permanent institutes during the year, which have proved at least two years of activities. These include 25 instrumental bodies, the opera, choirs, music organizations, festivals, various ensembles, professional schools, workshops, contests and prizes, documentations and publishing. In addition, the department conducts new activities, according to the needs of the field.
